How to Install an Electric Linear Fireplace

If you are looking for a way to add some warmth and style to your home, you might want to consider installing an electric linear fireplace. An electric linear fireplace is a type of fireplace that consists of an insert that mimics the look of a real fire, and a surround that frames it. Electric linear fireplaces are easy to use, energy-efficient, and safe. They do not require any venting or chimney, which means you can install them almost anywhere.

One of the ways to enhance the appearance of your electric linear fireplace is to coat the surround with Roman clay plaster. Roman clay plaster is a natural and eco-friendly material that gives your wall a textured and organic look. It is easy to apply and comes in different colors and finishes.

In this blog post, we will show you how to install an electric linear fireplace that includes framing a wall out of 2x4 studs, adding drywall and joint compound, and coating with Roman clay plaster.

What You Will Need

Before you start your project, make sure you have the following tools and materials:

-   An electric linear fireplace insert of your choice. You can find various models online or at your local fireplace store.

-   Stud finder

-   Level

-   Tape measure

-   Pencil

-   Drill

-   Screws

-   2x4 studs

-   Drywall

-   Drywall screws

-   Utility knife

-   Drywall saw

-   Taping knife

-   Joint compound

-   Drywall tape

-   Corner Bead

-   Sandpaper

-   Roman clay plaster

-   Trowel

-   Paint roller

-   Paint tray

-   Drop cloth

Step 1: Plan Your Fireplace Location and Size

The first step is to decide where you want to install your electric fireplace and how big you want it to be. You can use a cardboard cutout of the fireplace insert or painters tape to help you visualize the placement and clearance. Make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions for the minimum distance from the floor, ceiling, and other objects.

You also need to check the rough opening dimensions of your fireplace insert, which are the height and width of the hole that you need to create in the wall. You can find these dimensions on the manufacturer's website or manual. For example, the Napoleon Alluravison 60 Fireplace requires a rough opening of 60 11/16 inches wide and 16 1/8 inches high.

Step 2: Frame the Wall with 2x4 Studs

The next step is to frame the wall with 2x4 studs. This will create a recessed space for your fireplace insert and provide extra support for the wall. We used metal track for the top and bottom plates. The wood 2x4 studs are then screwed into the metal tracks on 16” centers using a drill and drywall screws. Frame the rough opening for your fireplace insert using the manufacturer's instructions. We also planned ahead and added bracing for our TV mounting bracket Using 2x6  ‘s between the studs where the TV mount will be hung. This will eliminate the need for using drywall anchors later and give your TV a much stronger mounting point.

Step 3: Add Drywall and Joint Compound

The third step is to cover the framing with drywall. Cut the drywall using a utility knife to the appropriate length and attach using drywall screws.

After you have attached all the pieces of drywall, you will need to apply joint compound and drywall tape over the seams and screw holes. At this point, we will attach the corner bead to the outside corners of the built out wall. Use a taping knife to spread a thin layer of joint compound over each seam and press a piece of drywall tape on top of it. Smooth out any bubbles or excess compound with your knife. Then apply another layer of joint compound over the tape and feather it out with your knife. Repeat this process for all the seams and screw holes. It is best to do 3 coats of mud, sanding between each coat.

Let the joint compound dry completely before sanding it lightly with sandpaper until smooth. I also put the baseboards back on at this point.

Step 4: Apply Roman Clay Plaster

The fourth step is to apply Roman clay plaster over your drywall. Roman clay plaster comes pre-tinted and pre-mixed; just stir it well before using it. You will need a trowel and a paint tray to hold the plaster while applying.

First, protect your floor and surrounding areas with a drop cloth and painter's tape. Then prime your surface with a white primer if necessary.

Next, apply Roman clay plaster in small amounts using a trowel or a putty knife. Use sweeping motions when applying, going in different directions. This will give you a natural texture. Go back over each area until smooth. Start on one corner and work your way across the entire area.

After you have applied one coat of Roman clay plaster, let it dry completely before applying another coat if desired.

Step 5: Install the Electric Fireplace Insert

The final step is to install the electric fireplace insert into the framed opening. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for how to install the insert properly. You may need to attach some brackets or screws to secure the insert to the studs. Make sure the insert is level and fits snugly in the opening. Then plug it into an electrical outlet and test it to make sure it works.

You have now completed your electric linear fireplace installation with Roman clay plaster. Enjoy your cozy and stylish fireplace!
